October 12, 2011 - Madrid Protocol CLE
TIPLA, in association with the North Carolina Bar Association Intellectual Property Law Section, sponsored the lunchtime presentation "Trademark Update: Madrid Protocol" featuring speaker Lynne Beresford, Former Trademark Commissioner from the USPTO. CLE credit was available and lunch was provided.
The well attended presentation provided an overview of the Madrid Protocol and discussed its advantages and disadvantages, compared to other trademark filing options, from the point of view of a former trademark commissioner and current WIPO spokesperson. The talk included discussion of some of the reasons that trademark applicants use or do not use the Madrid Protocol to secure trademark registrations in other countries, and included an update on trends, such as the number and types of applicants using the Madrid Protocol.
February 17, 2011 - TIPLA Gala Honoring B.B. Olive
On February 17, 2011 TIPLA members gathered at the Washington Duke Inn to recognize one of its own august members, B.B. Olive, by bestowing on Mr. Olive the first ever TIPLA Lifetime Achievement award. TIPLA was proud to have the opportunity to celebrate and honor B.B. Olive at this event. Mr. Olive, a pioneer in intellectual property law in North Carolina, established the first patent law firm serving the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina when he opened the doors of Olive & Olive in 1957. Mr. Olive graduated with honors from Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering and, while working for Westinghouse International Corporation, earned his law degree from St. John's University. He is admitted to the bars of New York and North Carolina, as well as the patent bar.
In addition to practicing patent law, Mr. Olive taught for many years at Duke's School of Engineering and N.C. State's School of Product Design. He founded the North Carolina Bar Association's committee on intellectual property law, fought segregation in the profession, was a founder of the first Triangle-wide association of entrepreneurs, and has been active in civic affairs. Among other honors, Mr. Olive has received military awards from both the U.S. and France, an award for civic service from the State of North Carolina, the Distinguished Alumnus Award of Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering, and (for his environmental work) the Charles Korstian Award of the Nicholas School of the Environment.
In B.B. Olive's honor, by Proclamation of the Governor, Thursday February 17th, 2011 was officially designated as INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW IN NORTH CAROLINA DAY, and North Carolina Secretary of State, Elaine Marshall, bestowed on Mr. Olive North Carolina's highest civilian award, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
Tom Irving, an internationally renowned speaker, teacher and practitioner in the field of intellectual property law was the keynote speaker of the TIPLA Gala honoring Mr. Olive.
